KATY HEALY

Occupational Therapist

Katy currently works with us on a Monday.  As well as the NHS, she has experience working for the HSE in Ireland and the Waikato Health Board in New Zealand. Whilst there she worked exclusively in Burns & Plastics where her professional interest in the treatment of scars and related soft tissue damage was developed. Additionally, during more than 20 years’ of health care experience, she has worked extensively in areas such as rheumatology, neurology, and orthopaedics, but her true passion was always working in the burns unit, providing the aftercare for scar management.

Through professional and personal experience of seeing the lack of services available in this specialist area of scar management and seeing its hugely beneficial impact in other health services, She is now working with clients, post surgically, who have struggled with a variety of complications following, for example, post C-Section, post Mastectomy, Achilles’ Tendon repairs, Total Hip/Knee Replacement and other similar procedures .

Her aim, and the objective of scar treatment, is primarily to improve the physical appearance of the scar and thereby assisting the range of movement in structures surrounding the scar. Such improvements can, additionally, improve the discomfort associated with scars, and provide an improved sense of confidence and well-being for patients who have had difficulty with scar complications.

ScarWork is a light-touch manual therapy, using hands directly on the surface of the skin without the use of lubricants or medical devices, to address tissue damage associated with scarring. This includes, but is not limited to, fibrosis, adhesions and contractures, resulting from surgery or trauma.  ScarWork is specifically designed to address the changed elastin and collagen associated with pathological scarring. It has been developed to be a gentle therapy; as ScarWork is a treatment always centred around the client’s individual comfort levels.
