Why do Physiotherapists use Dynamometry?

ActiveForce hand held dynamometer

In the world of Physiotherapy, outcome measures are essential for measuring patient progress. Using dynamometry can provide us with accurate objective measurements of muscle strength, endurance and function.

Read on to explore the importance of dynamometry in Physiotherapy and how it benefits both our patients and Physiotherapists.

Measurement of muscle strength

One of the main reasons for using dynamometry in Physiotherapy is to obtain objective data on a patient’s muscle strength. Physiotherapists have traditionally used Manual Muscle Testing (MMT) which relies upon a subjective grading by the therapist (a score of 0-5).

Dynamometry provides quantifiable data reducing variability and improving reliability and reproducability. This is particularly important where precise measurements are needed, for example in elite athlete rehabilitation or post surgery.

Muscle imbalances can lead to pain, dysfunction and injury. Dynamometry helps us identify asymmetries in strength and muscle group allowing for targeted interventions.

Tracking rehabilitation progress

Dynamometry enables our Physiotherapy team to track progress through a rehabilitation programme.

By comparing strength measurements over time, we can assess the effectiveness of treatment interventions and adjust programs accordingly. This data driven approach ensures patients receive personalised care based on their specific needs and improvements.

Optimising Patient motivation and compliance

Seeing tangible progress can be a real motivator for patients during rehabilitation. Patients receiving measurable feedback on their strength improvements are more likely to stay engaged and committed to their rehabilitation programmes. Our dynamometer provides clear, numerical evidence of progress.

Performance optimisation

Strength testing can help optimise athlete performance by ensuring training programmes are tailored to an individuals needs, considering the specific demands of their sport/activity. By detecting deficits early, our Physiotherapists can implement preventative exercise to reduce the risk of injury and improve performance.

We are delighted to be working with local sports teams on profiling their athletes.

Application in Physiotherapy

By integrating dynamometry into our clinical practice our Physiotherapy team in Aberdeen are ensuring we provide the most effective, personalised, data driven care leading to better rehabilitation results for our patients. We us it in:

Orthopaedic rehabilitation: assessing post injury or post surgical muscle recovery.

Sports Physiotherapy: Assessing and monitoring athlete performance and recovery
